Camryn's Thoughts

Date 4-5-19

I thought that Code Talkers so far is a very good book. So far I learned that Kii Yazhi was sent away to a school to learn English and other essential subjects. Kii Yazhi is currently in high school, and is hearing of an attack from japan (Chapter 6). I've throughout the book hated the teachers because of the harsh punishments inflicted on the kids for speaking Navajo. I think this is very sad because they're trying to wipe all Navajo out of these kids by renaming them, and making them only speak English. I would absolutely hate it if someone tried to erase my culture and identity from me, and If I were him I would run away or do something to avoid the teachers.

So far Ned has been shipped out to Hawaii, and has seen the dead bodies of his comrades and Japanese. Right now Wilfred (a soldier in Ned's platoon) is telling Ned that most Japanese soldiers are civilians that were told/brainwashed to think Americans are the most cruel people in the world, and that most of them will kill themselves when captured because they were told that Americans would torture them. If I were told this I would be sad because, these Innocent men/women and some kids were tricked into thinking we would kill and torture them. I would also be sad that those people jumped off cliffs or even drown themselves just to evade capture, even though we wouldn't torture them or hurt them in any severe ways.

Date 5-9-19

I thought the ending of code talkers was sad because, even though Navajos served one of the most important jobs in the war people treat them maybe even worse than before they joined the war. One of the most surprising things that happened was charlie (Ned's friend) was ambushed on patrol by the Japanese, and when Ned came to see the damage he was dead but the next day Charlie came to Ned's tent and was okay.
